| Last Wednesday night at the Loeb boathouse in Central Park, Caryn and Jeff Zucker hosted a party for Sloan Barnett and her debut book “Green Goes With Everything; Simple Steps to a Healthier Life and a Cleaner Planet” (published by Atria Books). Mrs. Barnet is known to many as a TV consumer correspondent and “Today” Show contributor. In this book, she reveals the next wave in green. It’s about health and the health of our families. She goes into the toxic trash behind our lifestyles and suggests how through a mix of science and common sense we can get rid of the pollution in ourselves. | Blue skies, gentle breezes, and a verdant 18-hole course awaited fifty golfers competing in teams of three or four at the 14th Annual Cancer Research Institute Golf Challenge, which was held last Monday at the beautiful Golf Club of Purchase in Purchase, New York. Players vied for top position for longest drive (which went to CRI co-chairman of the board Andy Paul), closest to the pin (won by Tom Clayton), and overall low team net score (awarded to Richard DiVenuto, Jeff Gerson, and Joseph LaManna). Second place overall team went to Matthew Bostock, Roy Bostock, Wally Nelson, and Tom Sheehan, and third place to Tom Clayton, Carlos Ferrer, Ryan Kirkpatrick, and Keith Longson. Champions in each category walked away with a crated assortment of fine vintage and nouveau wines and, perhaps more cherished, bragging rights. Congratulations to all the players for making the event such success. They raised $125,000 for the Institute. Special thanks go to event chair and CRI trustee Carlos A. Ferrer for organizing the event again this year, to The Golf Club of Purchase for hosting the event, and to participating CRI trustees Geoff Coley, Peter Crowley, Rich DeMartini, Glenn DeSimone, Pat McGrath, Tom Mendell, Andy Paul, Frank Sica, and Cindy Weiler. |

| Since its inception in 1953, the Cancer Research Institute (CRI) has had a singular mission—to support and coordinate laboratory and clinical research that will yield an understanding of the immune system and its response to cancer, with the ultimate goal of developing immunological methods for the treatment, control, and prevention of the disease. To accomplish these goals, CRI supports scientists at all stages of their careers and funds every step of the research process, from basic laboratory studies to clinical trials testing novel immunotherapies. Guided by a Scientific Advisory Council, which includes five Nobel Prize winners and 29 members of the National Academy of Sciences, CRI awards fellowships and grants to scientists around the world. Through its Cancer Vaccine Collaborative, a joint program with the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, and its Coordinated Cancer Initiatives, the Institute is advancing preclinical and clinical research by serving as the integrating force and facilitator of collaborations among leading experts. CRI has thus become a catalyst for accelerating the development of cancer vaccines and antibody therapies that are providing new hope to cancer patients. |

| Last Thursday Best & Co. and Baby Buggy hosted a breakfast and shopping event at Bergdorf Goodman. It was a beautiful autumn morning and the moms and their little ones, the grandmas and moms-to-be came to nibble the treats, have a cuppa and pick out some essentials for their bundles of joy. A portion of the morning’s proceeds benefited Baby Buggy which provides New York City’s families in need with essential equipment, clothing, and products for their infants and young children. |

| A week ago Sunday, celebrities and socialites turned out for an exclusive fundraiser by newlyweds Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi to support the YES! on Prop 2 campaign which is sponsored by The Humane Society of the United States at the Bel Air estate of John Winfield. Ms. DeGeneres spoke passionately about the importance of the November 4th California initiative, which aims to provide to stop the cruel and inhumane treatment of farm animals kept in tiny cages and crates where the animals can barely move. “I am just appalled that we are kept ignorant and are not shown how food gets to our table,” said DeGeneres, “If most people were actually aware of the process, they would stand up and do something about it and this is what we are trying to do right now.” |

| Among the guests who to help raise over $1 million for the campaign were animal lovers Frances Hayward, Cornelia Guest, Anne Hearst and husband Jay McInerney, R Couri Hay and Ken Howard, who stars in the upcoming Grey Gardens film with Drew Barrymore. Also showing their support were Tobey Maguire, Jared Leto, Arianna Huffington, James Cromwell, Amber Tamblyn, Amy Smart, Heather Graham, Kelly Lynch, Matt Grant, Catherine Oxenberg and Casper Van Dien. Enjoying the vegan meal and entertainment by Moby and Carol King under the stars were Hal Sparks, Corey Feldman, Carol Leifer, Emily Deschanel, and Jennifer Coolidge. “This modest measure simply allows farm animals enough room to stand up, turn around and stretch their limbs,” said HSUS President Wayne Pacelli. “The people who came out in support of the measure believe that all animals, including those raised for food, deserve humane treatment.” The more than 400 guests concurred. Prop 2 is endorsed by more than 100 animal protection charities, including many California humane societies and SPCAs in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, and beyond; and the State Humane Association of California. |

| A week ago last Friday, Lynn Redgrave joined Annabel Clark and Bruce Byers at the Opening Reception of the Rights of Passage Exhibit at National Arts Club featuring artists Clark and Byers; as well as Vanessa Redgrave and Aldon James, President of the National Arts Club. Annabel Clark and Bruce Byers discussed their photographic work for Healing the Children, a charitable organization which provides free surgery for needy children, Chinese Agape Foundation, St. Baldrick’s Foundation, and Action for Child Protection. Ms. Clark is widely-recognized for her collaboration with her mother, Lynn Redgrave on the highly acclaimed book, Journal: A Mother and Daughter’s Recovery from Breast Cancer. A portion of proceeds from print sales of the Rights of Passage Exhibition will benefit all four charities. Every child deserves an education and medical care. Yet these basic rights remain unavailable to a large majority. New York-based photographers Bruce Byers and Annabel Clark work with non-profit organizations that provide these services to children and teens in disadvantaged communities around the world. |

| Byers has photographed medical missions in Bangladesh, Cambodia and China through the charities Healing the Children Northeast (www.htcne.org [4]) and the Chinese Agape Foundation (www.new.china-missions.com [5]). He also photographs children living with cancer in the U.S. through the St. Baldrick’s Foundation (www.stbaldricks.org [6]). Clark connected with the Sierra Leonean charity Action for Child Protection (www.goderichwaldorf.org [7]) to photograph a school that provides free education to street children, some of whom grew up as soldiers in their country’s civil war. She has since gone on medical missions with Healing the Children to photograph youth in Colombia and Brazil for whom cleft lip and palate surgeries are life altering. In tandem, their photographs provide a glimpse into the lives of children in need. Given a free education and medical care, these children are able to rise above the challenges they have been born with so that they can not only integrate, but flourish in our world. The Exhibition runs through October 16 from 10 am – 5 pm daily and is free and open to the public at The National Arts Club, 15 Gramercy Park South (at 20th Street). |
