The New York Public Library honored Klaus Kleinfeld, President and CEO of Alcoa Inc., at its 2009 Corporate Dinner held a couple of weeks ago at The New York Public Library, Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. The evening began with cocktails in Astor Hall and dinner in the Edna Barnes Salomon Room The evening's special guests were Andy Borowitz, political satirist, award-winning screenwriter, and New Yorkercontributor, and Samuel C. Butler, Chairman Emeritus of The New York Public Library, who received a special honor commemorating the tenth anniversary of the Annual Corporate Dinner.

New York Public Library Chairman Catherine C. Marron and Library President Paul LeClerc presented the award to Mr. Kleinfeld. The evening raised more than $1.2 million with proceeds providing critical support for the Library’s collections and services.

“We are deeply grateful to Klaus Kleinfeld for his dedication to both major Library initiatives and the grassroots programs that are so meaningful to the community,” said Library President Paul LeClerc. “Mr. Kleinfeld and Alcoa Inc. are corporate champions of the Library, providing opportunities to young adults by supporting our Page Program and supplying volunteers to our Summer Reading events for children. Their support is important as the Library moves forward to serve a new generation of users.”

In addition to its robust support of conservation and the environment, Alcoa’s non-profit Foundation has supported literacy and education initiatives worldwide in communities where Alcoa has operations – particularly those that are underserved. Over the past three years, the Alcoa Foundation has invested $2.4 million in programs that specifically support literacy in Alcoa communities, including library digitization and technology for the future; increased access to books for children in underserved communities; and adult literacy for workforce readiness.

Thomas Schutte the president of Pratt Institute and the Board of Trustees of Pratt held a dinner celebrating the establishment of the Marc Rosen Distinguished Visiting Chair in Design – the first ever endowed chair in Pratt’s 122 year history.

Stribling Associates held an open house for the Bailey mansion at 10 St. Nicholas Place, the fabulous 1880s Victorian mansion of James Bailey, a partner of PT Barnum in the Barnum & Bailey circus. The property is a prominent icon in the heart of the culture-rich Harlem community of Sugar Hill, just steps away from Yankee Stadium as well as Jackie Robinson Park.

The limestone mansion was designated a city landmark in 1973. It’s been owned since 1951 by Marguerite Blake. Interiors were by Joseph Burr Tiffany, a cousin of Louis Comfort Tiffany and they feature extensive window installations by master craftsman Henry F. Belcher. The double height entry features French polished oak floors and crafted mahogany inlay with a dramatic staircase that flanks a 12 mercury mirror, offering an elegant entry experience.

UJA-Federation of New York’s Entertainment, Media & Communications Division honored Barry Weiss, chairman and CEO of RCA/JIVE Label Group, with the 2009 Music Visionary of the Year Award at UJA-Federation’s Music Visionary of the Year Award Luncheon on Thursday, June 18, 2009, at The Pierre.
