On the first day of this month, the United Hospital Fund, before a crowd of 700, paid tribute to Karen Davis, Elizabeth J. McCormack, and Josh N. Kuriloff at its annual gala, its 134th fund-raising campaign, held at the Waldorf. The honorees received an award for their contributions to improving health care in New York.
Karen Davis received the Health Care Leadership Award for her pioneering leadership in health care—locally, nationally, and internationally—and for a rich and extremely productive career guided by the philosophy that all Americans should have access to the highest-quality health care. Since becoming president of the historic New York City-based Commonwealth Fund in 1995, she has raised its national and international profile, and truly placed the foundation at the center of change in the way health care is delivered and paid for in America. |
Elizabeth J. McCormack, chairman of the Partnership for Palliative Care, received the Distinguished Community Service Award. She formed the nonprofit five years ago to stimulate public awareness and professional adoption of palliative services as an integral part of health care. Her goal was to expand and ensure access to the specialized medical, nursing, and social services that help people with chronic and other illnesses, and their families, better cope and live with the challenges that serious illness brings.
Established by the Fund in 1987, the Distinguished Community Service Award recognizes volunteer leadership that significantly improves health care in New York City. |

Josh N. Kuriloff, vice chairman of Cushman & Wakefield, was recognized with a Special Tribute for his outstanding service to New York’s health care community. In addition to serving on the Fund’s board since 1999, he played a key role in establishing and developing the Fund’s New Leadership Group, which encouraged young business professionals to learn about and see firsthand New York’s most pressing health care needs—and to support the Fund’s programs to address them.
The benefit chairman was J. Barclay Collins II, chairman of the United Hospital Fund, a health services research and philanthropic organization whose primary mission is to shape positive change in health care for the people of New York. For more information, please visit www.uhfnyc.org. |

On Wednesday, October 3rd The Bowery Mission held its Eighth Annual Celebration of Hope Auction at The Bowery Hotel. The event was generously underwritten by The May and Samuel Rudin Family Foundation, Inc.
The evening featured an impressive silent and live auction as well as a generous array of food tastings hosted by some of the Bowery's best restaurants and bakeries: Beauty and Essex, Bowery Diner, DBGB Kitchen & Bar, Freemans, Gemma, Pulino's Bar & Pizzeria, Veselka Bowery, and Little Cupcake Bakeshop.
The evening raised $141,000 for The Bowery Mission's Women's Center, Manhattan's only faith-based residential recovery program for homeless women. The Bowery Mission Women's Center at Heartease Home is committed to the vision of a safe home where a woman without shelter, without hope and without an advocate can find spiritual, emotional and physical restoration. Last Sunday afternoon the non-profit Dutchess Land Conservancy (DLC) held its annual fall luncheon fundraiser in upstate Stanfordville, NY. Co-chairs Kathleen Augustine, Helen Blodgett and Gloria Callen welcomed four hundred guests to Helen's beautiful Rocky Reef Farm. This year the luncheon honored retiring board members Everett Cook and Marta Nottebohm for their longstanding service and dedication to land conservation.
Guests were treated to a delicious lunch, hayrides for the children, and a spectacular "birds of prey" demonstration by falconer Jennifer Pena of Flight of the Raptor. The luncheon also featured a fabulous silent auction chaired by Jodi Dady.
Proceeds of the luncheon and silent auction provide the organization with much needed funds to continue its conservation efforts. Formed over twenty seven years ago, DLC has protected over 35,000 acres of open land in Dutchess County. Mary Hilliard was there to catch the action ... |

Music Director Jacques Lacombe and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra opened the NJSO’s 2012–13 concert season late last month with an Opening Night Celebration at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark. The concert program featured sensational pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet performing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Variations on “I’ve Got Rhythm” on a program of Jazz-Age American music.
The NJSO performed works by John Harbison and Ferde Grofé as part of the New Jersey Roots Project, as well as the work of a master of the Jazz Age—Duke Ellington’s Harlem. A dinner followed the NJSO performance. |
