Continuing a tradition that spans over sixty years, The Women’s Board of The Boys’ Club of New York hosted its annual Fall Dance on Thursday, October 28, at 583 Park Avenue, New York. More than 350 dined and danced under a canopy of pink, orange and coral swags created by Renny & Reed that crisscrossed the domed ceiling under the huge crystal chandelier.
Co-chairs Travis Acquavella, Tantivy Bostwick, Merrill Curtis and Claudia Overstrom gathered their friends for this spectacular night. Van Cleef & Arpels served as an underwriter, adding the beauty of its famed jewels to make the evening shimmer.
Following dinner Lydia Fenet of Christie’s entertained the guests with her spirited auction that featured a spa getaway to Ocean House in Rhode Island, golf at exclusive clubs, an internship with Douglas Hannant at his Plaza Hotel boutique, a stunning Van Cleef & Arpels Cadenas watch, a week’s stay at Cap Juluca, and a stay at the Breakers in Palm Beach for the Women’s Board’s upcoming Michael Kors Fashion Show and Luncheon. At the auction’s end, guests were given the opportunity to support swimming lessons for BCNY members. BCNY has made it a goal to teach every one of its members to swim in response to the recently released statistic that boys are more likely to drown than girls. |

Last Wednesday, East Side House Settlement and Sotheby’s hosted a kick-off party for the Young Collectors Night at the Winter Antiques Show. More than 80 partook of the cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in Sotheby’s 8th floor gallery to honor and thank the Young Collectors Night Vice Chairs and Benefit Committee.
Guests were welcomed by Co-Chairs Emily Israel and Courtney Booth, and Executive Director of East Side House, John Sanchez. The upcoming Young Collectors Night at the Winter Antiques Show will take place on Thursday, January 27, 2011 at the Park Avenue Armory. The evening attracts several hundred guests including young philanthropists, art enthusiasts, collectors, and interior designers.
Proceeds from this glamorous evening benefit East Side House Settlement, a leading social service agency that serves the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx, within the poorest Congressional district in the United States. The focus of the East Side House Settlement is education and technology training as gateways out of poverty. Programs include early childhood, after-school programs, Mott Haven Village Preparatory High School, Bronx Haven High School, adult education, computer technology programs and family services. |

On Friday, November 12th, the New England Society in the City of New York hosted its 205th Annual Dinner Dance at the St. Regis Hotel. Members and friends gathered to honor Tom Chappell, co-founder of Tom's of Maine and Ramblers Ways, with the Reginald T. Townsend Award, as well as honor the current and past New England Society scholarship recipients.
Upon accepting his Townsend Award, which recognizes outstanding achievement while representing the finest attributes of the New England character, Tom accurately defined the New England character as the spirit of freedom that comes from acting socially responsible. He also shared the story of his New England and New York ancestry. His gracious words and personal message were enthusiastically received by the 150 guests, including scholarship recipients: Juliette Ferrigno, Class of 2013, Gregory Gumbs, Class of 2010, and Cathya Solano, Trinity Class of 2011. The dancing and celebrating continued on until midnight and an over all terrific evening was had by all thanks to co-chairs Christopher and Liz Apgar, Tom Farrell and Suzanne Milton. |

| NES is a nonprofit charitable organization that provides significant, merit-based scholarships to financially-challenged New York City students attending New England colleges and universities. Established in 1805, NES has over 500 members, and conducts an active program of social and fundraising events, culminating with the Annual Dinner Dance. |

Last Tuesday night at the Asia Society, the eighth floor reception rooms were filled with people eager to see and hear Helen Philon talk about the new book Silent Splendour: Palaces of the Deccan 214th – 19th Centuries.
The speaker is the wife of Alexander Philon, former Greek Ambassador to India and the United States. Mrs. Philon is passionate about this region of India and the preservation of its heritage. After studying at the Ecole du Louvre in Paris and the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London, she wrote her PhD thesis at London University’s School of Oriental and African Studies. |
