This past Monday night at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, before the worlds top tennis players took to the courts for their first round matches, they held the Opening Night Ceremonies to officially kick-off the 2010 U.S. Open.
Celebrating the theme of "Dream, Succeed and Inspire," Opening Night Ceremony was hosted by ABC News’ Christiane Amanpour. The program included tributes to four special individuals who have overcome obstacles and adversity to achieve great things in their lives. They honored James Blake, who reached a career high ranking of No. 4 in the world; Esther Vergeer, the undisputed wheelchair tennis champion; the legendary Martina Navratilova, a champion with more titles to her credit than anyone who has ever played the game; and Dori Samadzai-Bonner, a young woman who escaped Afghanistan and has since become an avid tennis player in her adopted homeland, the United States.
Ms. Amanpour told the opening-night crowd that the ceremony honored "those who've dared to dream big." |

This past Sunday in East Hampton Ronald Perelman and Halle Berry hosted a luncheon at his estate The Creeks for the benefit of the Jenesse Center in Los Angeles which helps women who are victims of domestic violence make new lives for themselves and their children.
Berry told the guests that if she hadn’t been in a car accident thirteen years ago where she had a head injury (requiring 17 stitches in her forehead and giving her amnesia) she might never have found her “calling” which working at the Jenesse Center. In that accident she had been arrested for leaving the scene of the accident and was sentenced to 250 hours of community service for doing so. That sentence changed her life in the most powerful and positive way. |
 |
“It changed my life. I hadn’t been doing enough,” she told the guests in recounting how that same year she went to work at the Jenesse Center. Her own mother had been a victim of domestic violence and Berry herself admitted to having been in violent relationships.
Ronald Perelman also announced at the lunch that his company, Revlon, would donate half the $500,000 that the center needs for a new facility. On hearing the news, Halle Berry ran a lap around the tables and high-fived the crowd. |

Also this past Sunday night in East Hampton, there was a screening at Goose Creek of “Secretariat,” a film based on the famed Triple Crown Winner of the 1970s.
The screening room was filled with equestriens, horse lovers and friends who couldn’t resist the story of an indomitable housewife and mother who took over her ailing father’s stables and against all odds – with the help of a great veteran trainer fostered the first Triple Crown winner in twenty-five years.
Many believe Secretariat was the greatest racehorse of all time. The champion who was born in 1970 and lived to his nineteenth year. The Disney film will be released in early October. |
