Since its founding in 1899, Calvary Hospital has been devoted to providing care to adult patients in the advanced stages of cancer, addressing the symptoms of the disease, not its cure. Operated in connection with the Archdiocese of New York, Calvary is a voluntary, not-for-profit hospital, embodying a tradition of caring through its many programs and services. The cornerstone of Calvary’s program of service is its philosophy of compassionate care through its acute inpatient, outpatient, home care, hospice services, nursing home hospice and wound care services. Through its Palliative Care Institute, Calvary strives to transmit its exceptional knowledge of caring for the advanced cancer patient to other health care professionals, through research and education. The National Cancer Institute designated Calvary as the International Standard of Excellence for Palliative Care.

The Saturday before last (June 12th) at the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) up in Boston, the Museum Council hosted their 7th annual “Summer PARTY.” It was a festive black-tie evening celebrating the old Hollywood glamour of the classic noir era. The theme pervaded the atmosphere with “timeless” cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and desserts, films, antique cars, music, dancing, and everybody dressed to the nines.

This past Thursday night at the Edison Ballroom, they celebrated Henry Buhl's 80th birthday and his baby, A.C.E., The Association of Community Employment programs for the Homeless. A.C.E. was created by Henry when he moved into the SoHo neighborhood where he still lives in today. His intention was to assist the homeless men and women who hung out and panhandled those streets. He gave them jobs starting with cleaning up the neighborhood -- sweeping the stoops, the streets, in return for a wage and a meal and the beginning of what Henry intended -- a re-conditioning to go out into the world with full-time employment and self-sufficiency. The big moment of the evening last Thursday night was the personal appearance of Patti Smith, in Henry's honor.
