| From Punk Thru Grunge: “Objects Of Life” A Collaboration Between Patti Smith and Steven Sebring opened at Chelsea’s Robert Miller Gallery. I first met Patti Smith with Robert Mapplethorpe in Paris in the ‘70s. They were hanging out with Lisa Lyons – the first acclaimed female body-builder. Robert was a friend and neighbor in the West Village. He also introduced me to Sam Wagstaff, his primary supporter who was then living in his famed penthouse at One Fifth Avenue. Sam became my first serious Collector, purchasing images from the Pop Icon Collection. There are some artists whose “geist”/spirit is greater than their artifact, their individual works of art – whose creative energy infuses a culture, contributing to a shift. Patti Smith falls into this category. |

Patti Smith Traveling Case by Steven Sebring. |
| When I saw one of her first concerts I was impressed less by the total effect than the innovative edge of a raw mix of poetry, the spoken word, and in-your-face angry punk music – in the tradition of the enigmatic Yoko Ono and brilliant Bob Dylan, but intensified and furious. So it was with her first successful 1975 album “Horses.” Patti Smith and Robert Miller were roommates during their artistic studies at Pratt. Their friendship remained close and pivotal throughout the life of Mapplethorpe, who died from AIDS at the peak of his creativity. On exhibition are additional collaborations by Smith and Steven Sebring, a New York based artist, filmmaker and photographer, including my favorite, a portrait of Smith herself. |

Computer-Posterized Photo-Portrait of Robert Mapplethorpe by Jill Lynne, 1979. |
| Patti Smith, looking disheveled, sporting a signature grunge look, as well as a cup of “Joe,” spent the evening hanging out with Sam Shepherd ducking photographers and hiding out in the rear offices. Despite the freezing weather, the opening was attended by a large and enthusiastic crowd including Sam Shepherd, Mary Ellen Mark, and Anthony Haden-Guest. In 2007 Smith was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Her forthcoming book, Just Kids, is due out on January 17th. This interesting exhibition runs through February 6th. — Jill Lynne [1] for NYSD |
