Last Thursday, ArtWorks, The Naomi Cohain Foundation hosted its annual Art Auction Benefit; An Event to Help Fund Art Programs for Children with Chronic and Life-Threatening Illnesses. The Auction showcased the photography of ArtWorks' own, Katie Morone, and other works of select acclaimed photographers.
The event was held at Studio 450, 450 West 31st Street, with grand rooftop views of the West Side of Manhattan. The Auction was lighthearted, fun and brilliantly run by Auctioneer Harmer Johnson (former president of the Appraisers Association of America, he is an expert in Antiquities and Tribal Art.)
This annual fundraiser helps ArtWorks to provide children and young adults suffering from chronic and life-threatening illnesses, and their siblings, access to creative and performing arts programs that encourage the use of the creative process as a vehicle for healing, communication, self-expression and personal development. ArtWorks seeks to empower, validate, and honor these children by offering them the hands-on experience and materials with which to create, as well as the opportunity to publicly share their artistic accomplishments.
Founded in 2002, ArtWorks was created by Daniela Mendelsohn, who was inspired by the life of her cousin Naomi Cohain. In July of 1994, at the age of 14, Naomi was diagnosed with bone cancer. With her world suddenly diminished, Naomi found herself separated from friends and extended family. Her creative moments, shared with her art therapist, became more and more significant. Art became an anchor of strength, a vehicle for self-expression, an emotional outlet and a source of comfort. In February of 1995, Naomi passed away at the tender age of 15. Naomi's devotion to the importance of creative expression emphasizes the healing power of the arts. For more information, please visit: www.artworksfoundation.org |

Last Tuesday night, Academy Award-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman hosted an IN-House screening of “The World According To Garp” presented by THE WEEK, sponsored by Rado and HSBC Premier at Soho. Hoffman showcased the film, which co-starred Robin Williams, Glenn Close and John Lithgow as one of the most inspiring film’s of his career.
Glenn Close surprised Hoffman at the screening and shared memories from the making of the movie, which was her first role on the big screen. Guests including Greg Bello, Movies 101 Professor Richard Brown, Annie Churchill, Janna Bullock, Alice Judelson, Emma Snowden Jones, Mark Langrish, Mark W. Smith, Salvatore Strazzullo and Jodie Fanelli, Jon and Michelle Marie Heinemann as well as directors Amos Poe and James Wright took in the film and the newly renovated White Room at Soho House over wine and Svedka cocktails.
The IN-House Series was founded by film producer Katrina Pavlos in 2008 to showcase important films introduced by world famous actors, film makers, designers and artists with an insider’s point of view on new and old films. The impact of the series will be to greatly affect those in need through donations to FilmAid, and to celebrate the power of films to inspire.
The film series benefited FilmAid, a nonprofit organization that uses the power of film to change lives. By screening films to hundreds of thousands of forcibly displaced people each year, FilmAid promotes health, strengthens communities and enriches the lives of the world's most vulnerable. |
